What is an intraocular lens?

An intraocular lens is specifically designed to replace the natural lens of the eye after cataract surgery. When a cataract develops, the natural lens becomes cloudy, which obstructs vision. During cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the cloudy lens and typically replaces it with an intraocular lens, which is made of clear synthetic material. This lens allows light to focus properly on the retina, restoring vision.

It can also be used to correct refractive errors, but its main role is to function as a substitute for the lens that has been removed during surgery.
